A day after Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla clarified that it was the captain’s call and the cricket board didn't pressurize the 38-year-old into making that decision
Rohit announced his decision through an Instagram story, just ahead of the selection of India’s squad for the upcoming five-Test tour of England.
In an interaction with news agency PTI, Shukla said BCCI welcomes the decision from Rohit and added that the board doesn't put pressure on players who have made the decision to retire.
The BCCI vice-president went on to hailed Rohit for his contributions and called him a great batter.
“As far as Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket is concerned, he has made his own decision. We welcome his decision. It is our policy that the players who take the decision of retirement—we do not put any pressure on them, nor do we suggest anything, nor do we say anything,” Shukla stated.
“He has made a big contribution to Test cricket. The more we praise him, the less it is. He is a great batsman. The good thing is that he has not yet decided to retire from cricket. So we will definitely take advantage of his experience and talent. And we wish him luck for his future,” he added.
There are quite a few candidates competing for the Indian Test captaincy post. However, Shukla said that the selectors will make the call and there shouldn't be any speculation around it.
“That is the job of the selectors,” said Shukla. “No, there should not be any speculations. The selectors will decide and tell you who the captain is it is solely and purely their call.”
India’s Test tour of England is slated to get underway on June 20 in Leeds.
