On April 15, 2025, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosted the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Mullanpur Stadium in Chandigarh for the 31st match of the IPL 2025.

PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bat first. Priyansh Arya (22) and Prabhsimran Singh (30) scored 39 runs in 3.2 overs. But suddenly, the PBKS lineup collapsed like a deck of cards. Shreyas Iyer was out for a two-ball duck, and the rest of the hitters followed.

Shashank Singh scored 18 to take the total past 100 runs, but the PBKS was bowled out for 111 in 15.3 overs. Harshit Rana took three wickets for twenty-five runs, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine each took two.

KKR had a poor start as both openers, Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine, both got out for single-digit scores. Then Yuzvendra Chahal struck twice, dismissing Ajinkya Rahane (17) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (37). Venkatesh Iyer was dismissed for 7 by Glenn Maxwell, leaving KKR 74/5 in the 11th over.

Chahal then destroyed KKR's hopes when he dismissed Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh in two balls. While Andre Russell made 17 with 2 sixes and one four, things came down to only him at the crease.

However, with 17 needed off 30 balls, Marco Jansen clean bowled Russell on the first ball of the 16th over to bowl KKR out for 95 runs and gave PBKS the win by 16 runs. Yuzvendra Chahal starred with 4/28, while Marco Jansen picked 3/17 for PBKS. Chahal was given the Player of the Match award.

This was the lowest total ever defended by a team in IPL history, beating CSK’s record of 116 runs. In fact, PBKS now holds the record for both the highest total chased in IPL- 262 against KKR and the lowest total defended in IPL- 111, also against KKR.

The cricket fraternity was left stunned as PBKS created history by defending the lowest ever total in IPL. They took to social media and wholeheartedly lauded the Punjab Kings.
