IPL 2023: “Last year, we did a big favour to RCB,” says Rohit Sharma after MI beat SRH to keep playoffs hopes alive

Rohit Sharma | BCCI-IPLMumbai Indians (MI) kept their IPL 2023 playoffs hopes alive with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday (May 21).

Chasing 201 to win, MI rode on Cameron Green’s whirlwind 100* off 47 balls and Rohit Sharma’s 37-ball 56 to overhaul the target with two overs to spare.

With this victory, the five-time champions moved to the fourth spot in the 10-team standings with 16 points from 14 games but their fate still hangs in the balance.

In order for MI to qualify for the playoffs, RCB need to lose against defending champions Gujarat Titans in the last round-robin game of IPL 16 on Sunday evening.

Speaking after the game, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit cheekily reminded RCB of the favour his team did to them last season.

Notably, MI’s five-wicket win over DC had paved the way for RCB to enter the playoffs in IPL 2022.

“Last year, we did a big favour to RCB, I hope we get the result what we are looking for,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“We wanted to win and not worry about what happens elsewhere. What you can control, you can control and then hope for the best. If we don’t go through, we’ve got ourselves to blame for it. If we go through, I’ll give all the credit to the boys,” he added.

After a tough start to their campaign, Mumbai Indians peaked at the right time to be in contention for a spot in the playoffs.

Reflecting on the season, Rohit said: “We did a lot of things right as we went along. We didn’t start well and then won three on the trot. The crucial moments in the game that we lost – there were a lot of moments like that. The game against Punjab here where we needed around 34 runs off 18 balls, we could have probably played well. And the last game against LSG, we had the game in our hands after the first half of the innings. We can’t look too much into that. Sometimes it just doesn’t come along.”
