IPL 2023: Rohit might sit out a few games to manage workload; Suryakumar to lead MI in his absence – Report

The 2023 edition of IPL is due to get underway on March 31.

Rohit Sharma | MI/TwitterEarlier this year, the BCCI said that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) will work in tandem with the IPL franchises to monitor the workload of Indian players shortlisted for the 50-over World Cup at home in October-November.

Considering the fact that the Indian team has also qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, slated to be held at the Oval from June 7-11, the workload management has become paramount during the IPL 2023, due to be played from March 31 to May 28.

With only three days left to the start of IPL 16, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma attended a press conference on Tuesday (March 28) alongside the team’s coach Mark Boucher.

During the media conference, Rohit dodged the question related to his resting in the upcoming IPL season.

“I will leave it to Mark (Boucher),” the MI captain quipped. To this, Boucher said, “If he (Rohit) wants rest will give him.”

Meanwhile, a report published in The Indian Express suggests that Rohit might sit out a few IPL games this season with an aim to manage his workload, and Suryakumar Yadav will perform the captaincy duties in his absence.

As per the report, Rohit is likely to pick and choose the IPL games this season. However, he will continue to travel with the team and will be guiding Surya from the dugout.

After the end of the ODI series against Australia last week, Rohit Sharma had said that managing the workload of Indian players during the upcoming IPL is up to the franchises.

“It’s all up to the franchises now. They own them now. We have given some indications to the teams, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the franchises. And more importantly, it’s up to the players. They are all adults; they have to look after their bodies. If they feel it’s getting a bit too much, they can talk about it and take a break in one or two games. I doubt if that will happen,” quoted Rohit in a press conference.
