Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma rued Tim David’s run-out after his team suffered a narrow three-run defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday (May 17).
Chasing 194 to win, MI were struggling at 144/5 in the 17th over and it was then Tim David produced a gem of a knock (46 off 18 balls) to bring the five-time champions back in the contest.
However, he got run out in the final delivery of the 18th over while attempting a single to keep the strike with MI still needing 19 off the last two overs.
Tim David’s wicket was the turning point in the match as Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1-26) bowled a wicket maiden in the penultimate over to put SRH on the brink of victory while Fazalhaq Farooqi conceded 15 runs in the final over to seal the deal.
“Till about the second last over I thought we had it. Unfortunate run-out there of Tim David. We thought we were very much in the game till that run-out,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“You would back yourself to get even 19 off the final over. Credit to Sunrisers, they held their nerve pretty well at the back end,” he added.
Invited to bat first, SRH piled up a massive 193/6 in their 20 overs on the back of Rahul Tripathi’s 44-ball 76. Priyam Garg (42 off 26 balls) and Nicholas Pooran (38 off 22 balls) also made notable contributions with the bat.
At one stage, the Sunrisers were looking set for a total beyond 220 but MI bowlers pulled things back in the death overs. Ramandeep Singh starred with the ball, claiming three wickets by conceding 20 runs in his three overs.
“We wanted to try a few things keeping one eye on the future. We wanted certain guys to bowl under pressure in certain situations of the game but I thought they batted pretty well to get 193. The way we pulled things back at the end was very good. We weren't consistent up front with the ball. We came pretty close with the bat but couldn't finish off,” Rohit said.
The MI captain was the top scorer in their innings with 36-ball 48. He added 95 runs for the opening wicket with Ishan Kishan (43) before Mumbai suffered a middle-order collapse.
“Feels good (to get his highest score on the score). For us it is simple (for the last game). Just want to tick off the boxes and finish off on a high note. We will try everything we can from our side. If there is an opportunity to try out new guys we will definitely look to do that as well,” Rohit concluded.
Mumbai Indians will take on Delhi Capitals in their last league match on May 21.
