In the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League, Umran Malik, a 22-year-old Jammu & Kashmir native, has been outstanding with the ball (IPL). Bowling at express pace, he has 21 wickets to his name in 13 appearances for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and is a strong contender for the purple cap.

The young sensation produced a match-winning spell against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday (May 17), taking three wickets while giving away only 23 runs in his three overs. With this match-winning spell, he also became the youngest Indian bowler to take 20 or more wickets in an IPL season, breaking Jasprit Bumrah's record from 2017.

His tally of 21 wickets is the second-highest for a pacer (behind Kagiso Rabada’s 22) in the ongoing season and the fourth-highest overall.

The Kane Williamson-led side on the back of a Rahul Tripathi’s blistering half-century (76 off 44 balls) and Malik’s brilliance with the ball (3/23) defeated MI by 3 runs to keep their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.

The opening stand of 95 runs between skipper Rohit Sharma (48 off 36 balls) and Ishan Kishan (43 off 34 balls) wasn’t enough to take the five-time champions over the line as the middle-order batters except for Tim David, who played a brisk 18 balls 46, couldn’t get going and were dismissed cheaply.
