IPL 2022: “We were a few runs and a few wickets short” Sanju Samson on RR’s huge loss to DC

Except for Chahal and Boult, all of the RR bowlers remained wicketless.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson said that his team fell 15 runs short of what would have been an ideal score on a slow track at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai in the match against the Delhi Capitals on Wednesday (May 11). The Capitals after winning the toss opted to bowl first.

The highlight of the RR innings was Ravichandran Ashwin walking in at number 3 and hitting his maiden IPL fifty (50 off 38 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal’s brisk 30-ball 48. Both the batters pushed the team’s total to 160/6 in 20 overs.

Sanju remarked after the match that if his team had scored 10-15 more runs in their innings, they could have made it difficult for the Capitals and further remarked they were unlucky that a few catches dropped short.

In the 9th over, off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling, Warner got a lifeline after the ball hit the stumps but the bails didn’t fall off.

“Very disappointing night. We were a few runs and a few wickets short. It was a two-paced wicket when we were batting, we thought we were 15 runs short. We had some bad luck with a few catches falling in front and one hitting the stumps but the bail not coming off,” he said.

The Capitals chased down the target with ease with 8 wickets in hand owing to David Warner’s laborious 41-ball 52 and Mitchell Marsh’s blistering 62-ball 89. Marsh, the Player-of-the-Match, escaped an LBW appeal and the Sanju-led team did not review it.

“I thought it hit the bat and never made contact with the pad,” he stated.

The Rishabh Pant-led side eventually chased down the target with 8 wickets still in hand. After the loss, the 2008 IPL champions stayed in third in the points table with 6 wins in 12 matches and will next take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The captain of the Rajasthan franchise was confident about his team getting back to winning ways.
“Coming back stronger after losses is important, that'll be our focus in the next game. Hopefully, we'll get Hettie (Shimron Hetmyer) back soon,” he added.
