Mumbai Indians (MI) were defeated by Delhi Capitals (DC) in their opening encounter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday (March 27) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
MI scored 178 runs, largely thanks to a valiant performance by Ishan Kishan, who scored 81 runs in 48 balls. Captain Rohit Sharma also chipped in with a vital 41 off 32 balls.
The star bowler for Delhi Capitals was Kuldeep Yadav, who made 3 crucial breakthroughs and gave just 18 runs in his 4 overs.
In the second innings, Delhi lost three wickets in the first powerplay. Rishabh Pant, their skipper, was one of them. The bowling team could not have started any better. Prithvi Shaw, on the other hand, stood at the opposite end. He played some splendid shots but owing to a spirited full-length dive by Kishan, he too, was out in the 10th over.

Shardul Thakur batted at no.7 and scored a quickfire 22 off 11 balls, taking on Jasprit Bumrah for two boundaries in one over. Thakur appeared to be very dangerous, but Thampi got him just then.
It had started to look like an easy win for Mumbai. But thanks to an unbeaten half-century partnership between Axar Patel (38*) and Lalit Yadav (48*), Capitals won the match with 10 balls to spare.
‘DIDN’T STICK TO PLANS’
With just 4 wickets in hand, Capitals at one point needed 75 runs in 42 balls to win the match. It looked like an easy win for Mumbai.
When skipper Rohit Sharma was asked about this, he said, "I thought it was a good score. It didn't look like that kind of a pitch where you could get 170-plus at the start. But we played really well in the middle and finished off really well as well. Good score on the board, it's just that we didn't bowl according to the plans,"
This was Mumbai Indians' tenth consecutive loss in their season opener. On being asked about this, Rohit said, "Honestly, that's never been the talk. We always come prepared, whether it's the first game or last game, we want to try and win every game. But we made some mistakes on the field which didn't go according to plans. But those things can happen. We just need to keep it tight within the group. Disappointed, but it's not the end,"
