The Mumbai Indians (MI) became the second team in IPL history to defend their title after they beat the Delhi Capitals in Dubai on Tuesday, November 10. MI chased down 157 with 8 balls to spare and achieved a comfortable victory against the second-best side in IPL 2020.
Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first on the big night. The Capitals posted 156/7 after being 22/3 in the 4th over. The Mumbai Indians openers Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock went all guns blazing before the latter got out in the 5th over.
IPL 2020: MI players cite "insatiable hunger" to explain their team's sustained excellence
Suryakumar Yadav came in and looked good for his knock of 19 runs off 20 balls. He engaged with his skipper in another 45-run stand. In the 11th over of the innings, Rohit Sharma pushed a delivery towards mid-off and set off for a run. Yadav refused the single but Sharma had come down too far to go back.
Eventually, Yadav took it upon himself and took a couple of steps towards the end where the throw came in and sacrificed his wicket. He ended a stellar season with 480 runs under his belt. In the post-match ceremony, Sharma appreciated him and also mentioned that he should have sacrificed his wicket for Yadav instead.
Sharma said in the post-match presentation, "The kind of form he was in, I should have sacrificed my wicket for Surya."
The MI skipper went on to score 68 off 51 balls and took his side to a fifth title win in the IPL.
