Shubman Gill fell for a duck in India’s first innings of the opening Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Thursday (September 19).

Gill was strangled down the leg side in the eighth over of India’s innings. Hasan Mahmud bowled a full ball down the leg-side, and the Indian No. 3 thought it's an easy delivery to flick down the leg side but all he managed was an inside edge, resulting in an easy catch for Litton Das behind the stumps.

Gill was part of the top-order collapse as India also lost star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for 6 runs each in the first hour of the morning session.

Reflecting on Shubman Gill’s dismissal, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel said it was an instinctive shot and the batter was unlucky to get out.

"I think he was unlucky. When you get out down the leg side, it is a bit of an instinctive shot. His game plan is to stay ahead of the popping crease. He stays almost half ahead of the popping crease," said Parthiv while speaking to JioCinema.

"He tries to negotiate that swing or seam, which a bowler is getting. But in cricket we say there are two unluckiest dismissals. One is to get run out at the non striker and or or you get out down the legside and caught behind and that's exactly what happened with Shubman Gill," he added.

Parthiv also emphasized that a batter usually doesn't leave such a delivery down the leg side as the bat just instinctively go there in an attempt to fetch a boundary.

"You don't really leave that ball. Once you see that ball going down the leg side, your bat instinctively goes there and sometimes you know if you get a slightly better part of the bat, you may get it to a boundary. But otherwise, this time I thought Shubman was unlucky that he got a faint edge," he stated.

After the three quick wickets, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant added 62 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the ship. While Pant was dismissed for 39, Jaiswal was nearing his half-century at the time of writing this article and KL Rahul was partnership him at the crease.
