Indian cricket team will enter a new era in Test cricket with Gautam Gambhir as head coach when they take on Bangladesh in the first of the two Tests in Chennai on September 19, 2024. Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach after T20 World Cup 2024.
Rohit thrived as a captain under Rahul Dravid's tutelage, and the Indian cricket team ended its 13-year drought for world championships in any format.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes India's playing XI will reveal what kind of connection exists between Gambhir and Rohit at the moment.
Manjrekar used the relationships of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri, as well as Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, to demonstrate how the chemistry between captain and coach played an important role in developing teams.
"It was very clear that Rohit and Rahul clicked together. When Virat and Ravi were there, some of the decisions, especially while picking the playing XI gave you an idea of how much influence the coach had on the captain. I think you will start getting an idea about their dynamics with the selections that they make, not so much the results," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.
Manjrekar also shared his thoughts on Gambhir’s approach as head coach and stated that he expects the former India opener to change his ways slightly.
"I have known Gambhir for the last 4 years. He is someone who reads the game very well and is someone who can be clinical with Indian cricket and not too emotional. I have always believed that the coach is as good as the team. Indian cricket is in a great state, and hope that continues. What we see of Gambhir is a persona on TV and I think when he is in the dressing room he will change his approach a little bit," Manjrekar concluded.
