India skipper Rohit Sharma on Tuesday (September 17) commented on Gautam Gambhir's coaching style, saying that it is different from his predecessor Rahul Dravid. However, Rohit insisted that he shares a healthy rapport with the new head coach, and the rest of his support staff members.

Gambhir was named the chief coach after Dravid’s tenure ended with the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph in June. His stint with the Men in Blue began on a bitter-sweet note as India blanked Sri Lanka 3-0 in T20Is but lost the ODIs 0-2.

Having said that, Gambhir has a long road with stern challenges ahead. His next assignment with the Indian team is the home Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai.

"Obviously, Rahul bhai, Vikram Rathour (former batting coach) and Paras Mhambrey (former bowling coach) were a different team and it is only acceptable that the new support staff will bring different perspective," Rohit said in the pre-series press conference.

"But the matches that we engaged in (with the new staff) in Sri Lanka, they seemed to be sensible and understanding. They began to learn things pretty quickly within the team," he added.

Gambhir was granted the freedom to pick his coaching staff, pending BCCI’s approvals. He played a key role in bringing Abhishek Nayar, Ryan Ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel on board.

While Nayar and Ten Doeschate joined the Indian team as assistant coaches, Morkel signed a deal with the BCCI as a bowling coach.

However, T Dilip was retained for the post of a fielding coach. Dilip, who was part of the Dravid-led coaching staff, remains an integral member of the new coaching setup.

Rohit used his long association with Gambhir during the latter's playing days, and with Abhishek Nayar in the Mumbai dressing room to highlight his sound working relation with them.

"It's a new (support) staff for sure, but I have known Gautam Gambhir and Abhishek Nayar long enough. Every support staff has its operating style, and that's what we were expecting.

"I have worked with different coaches over 17 years of my career, and it's vital to understand that all of them have a unique perspective (about cricket), and it's a must that you adjust with them," he stated.

While Rohit has never worked alongside Morkel and Doeschate, the Indian captain said he has enough knowledge of them from their playing days to strike a comfortable bonding.

"I have also played matches against Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate. I have some close encounters with Morkel, but not so much with Ryan, may be a couple of matches. But that doesn't matter.

"As of now, there have been no issues or problems as such (with the new set of support staff). We have a great understanding of each other. Good understanding is important, and I have that with them," he remarked.
