Rohit Sharma's highly-anticipated outing as an opener in red-ball cricket started in a grand fashion as the stylish right-hander smashed a ton on Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday (October 1).
Rohit came out to open the innings alongside Mayank Agarwal after the hosts won the toss and opted to bat first. After surviving Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander’s brilliance with the new ball, Rohit came into his own and didn’t let the Proteas bowlers settle.
He constantly attacked the visiting spinners and notched up his fifty off 84 deliveries. In the second session, India’s limited-overs vice-captain displayed his full array of strokes to reach his fourth Test ton in 154 balls.
Rohit was unbeaten on 115 with 12 fours and 5 sixes while Agarwal was 16 short of his maiden Test ton as India reached 202/0 at the Tea break.
Cricket experts on Twitter were mighty impressed by Rohit’s sparkling showing in this new role.
