England batter Harry Brook has rejected his selection as the Player of the Series by India coach Gautam Gambhir in the recently concluded five-Test series and stated that he didn’t score many runs to be chosen so.

Brook said Root was the more worthy contender because of his steady contributions, even though he scored 481 runs at an average of 53.44 during the five-Test series, including a smooth 111 at The Oval on the last day.

On the other hand, Joe Root made 537 runs with three centuries and one fifty with an average of 67.12 and a best of 150.

It is the opposition coaches who choose the winners of England's two Player of the Series honors.  

After India's thrilling six-run victory in the fifth Test, England head coach Brendon McCullum selected India skipper Shubman Gill, and Gambhir nominated Brook as England's exceptional player. The series concluded 2-2.  England was on the verge of a record chase after Brook's offensive century on the last day, but the hosts lost 7 for 66 as a result of his dismissal.

"I didn't score as many runs as Rooty (Joe Root), so I probably think he should be Man of the Series or Man of the Summer. He has been for many years,” Brook said in a conversation with the BBC.

In retrospect, Brook acknowledged that while he and Root were batting together, he thought England was going to win.

"My thought process was just to try and hit as many runs as quickly as possible. The game's done if we need 40 runs with me and Rooty in there. If I get out there, the game's still done. Obviously, it didn't work,” Brook said.

Brook now focuses on the white-ball season, captaining Northern Superchargers in The Hundred before heading to England in the limited-overs series against South Africa and Ireland.
