Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi will reportedly receive a special gold medal for his strong stance against the Indian team and the BCCI in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy.
Naqvi intended to personally hand over the Asia Cup trophy to the Indian team, who defeated Pakistan in the final last Sunday. However, the Indian players refused to accept it from him, sparking a major dispute. Naqvi took the trophy away, denying the Indian players the opportunity to celebrate with it on the stage.
The Indian squad is yet to receive the prize. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is dissatisfied with the situation and plans to file a formal complaint against Naqvi with the International Cricket Council. According to reports, Naqvi told the BCCI that if India wanted the trophy, they had to collect it straight from him at the ACC office.
Now, several Pakistani media portals have reported that Mohsin Naqvi is set to receive a special medal for his courageous stance against the BCCI and the Indian team.
As per Pakistani news outlet The Nation, Naqvi is set to receive the Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Excellence Gold Medal in Karachi. The honor is being granted for what Pakistani officials describe as his "firm and principled stance" against Indian demands during the Asia Cup final.
Advocate Ghulam Abbas Jamal, head of the Karachi Basketball Association, reportedly announced Naqvi's prize. According to The Nation, the award would be presented at a big event in Karachi, with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari scheduled to be the primary guest.
The just-finished Asia Cup 2025, which was played in the T20 format in the UAE, heightened tensions between longtime rivals India and Pakistan. In all three tournament matches against Pakistan, the Indian team refused to shake hands with their opponents.
Naqvi, although being the ACC president and required to remain neutral, openly supported the Pakistani squad.
