Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rolled back the years with a 168-run partnership in what could be their Australian swansongs as India thrashed the hosts by nine wickets in third ODI at SCG last Saturday (October 25).
Rohit’s magnificent 121* off 125 balls, laced with 13 fours and three sixes, showcased his power, while Kohli’s measured 74* off 81 balls demonstrated his excellent strike rotation and calculated risk-taking abilities in the chase of 237.
Speculations were rife about Rohit and Kohli’s retirements after the Australia series, but the duo silenced their critics with a flamboyant display. In fact, their brilliance in Sydney helped India avoid a series whitewash.
After seeing their heroics in third ODI, South African legend AB de Villiers minced no words as he launched a scathing attack on the critics of Rohit and Kohli.
During a live session on his X account, de Villiers claimed that people are just trying to bring down the veteran campaigners, considering they are in the twilight of their careers.
“I don't know what it is about people. I'm not sure if I can call them people. Cockroaches climbing out of their holes as soon as players get towards the backend of their careers. Why?” asked de Villiers.
"Why do you want to pour negative energy into players that have given their lives for their country and this beautiful game of cricket. This is the perfect time to celebrate them," he added.
Rohit and Kohli will next be in action in the three-match ODI series against South Africa at home, starting November 30. Once this ends on December 6, there are no ODIs scheduled till January 2026 against New Zealand. Hence, they might just have to play domestic cricket to stay match fit and in rhythm.
AB de Villiers reckons that this is the perfect time to celebrate Rohit and Kohli, who have served Indian cricket to the best of their abilities over the years.
"They have taken a lot of criticism in the last few months. Everyone is just trying to push them down for what reason, I have no idea. Obviously, I am referring to the minority because I think the majority of people celebrate Rohit and Virat and their incredible careers. And it is a fantastic time to celebrate them once again," the former Proteas captain remarked.
