BCCI President Mithun Manhas and vice-president Rajeev Shukla have taken to social media and wished Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer a speedy recovery after he suffered a laceration injury to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday.
In the 30th over of the Australian innings, Alex Carey mishit his shot, throwing the ball into the air. Shreyas, positioned in the rear, pivoted and dashed towards the ball's descent. He leaped perfectly and caught the ball, ending his 59-run partnership with Matthew Renshaw.
However, he landed awkwardly, bruising his left side and showing signs of discomfort. His teammates and medical personnel swiftly responded to him, and he was able to leave the field with help.
Shreyas was sent to a Sydney hospital for additional evaluation. On Monday, the BCCI stated that the 30-year-old is "medically stable" and "recovering well." The team doctor will remain in Sydney to monitor Shreyas' progress.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region… He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress," BCCI said in a statement on Monday.
The 30-year-old will remain under observation for 2-7 days. He is not part of the Indian T20I squad, s the five-match series against Australia will begin on October 29 in Canberra.
Meanwhile, BCCI President Mithun Manhas took to X and stated: “Wishing Shreyas Iyer a speedy recovery and hoping he takes the field as soon as possible.”
On the other hand, Shukla expressed hope for Shreyas’ swift return.
He posted: “Wishing Shreyas Iyer a quick recovery. His unwavering spirit and commitment to the game are truly admirable. Looking forward to seeing him back on the field soon, stronger than ever."
