India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital, Cricbuzz reported.
This is after Iyer suffered a laceration injury to the spleen during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday (October 25).
The 30-year-old fell awkwardly after taking Alex Carey’s catch and was seen holding his ribs in pain, prompting teammates to rush over and check on him.
Despite being attended by the physio, Shreyas walked off the field and the middle-order batter wasn’t needed to bat as India chased down the target of 237 with nine wickets in hand.
On Monday (October 27), BCCI issued a statement, saying: “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the statement added.
Now, a report published in Cricbuzz claims that Shreyas Iyer is out of danger but will remain under hospital care for a few more days.
"Sources say Iyer is out of danger, although he appears to have suffered some internal bleeding from the impact while taking the catch of Alex Carey off Harshit Rana. He was immediately admitted to a hospital in Sydney, with travelling Indian team doctor Dr. Rizwan Khan constantly by his side," the report stated.
"A few local friends have also been keeping him company, and a family member may fly to Sydney from Mumbai once the visa formalities are completed. The family was unable to apply over the weekend, delaying the process slightly," it added.
While there is no clarity on Iyer’s return, the BCCI has clarified that there will be no haste in bringing him back to action.
India’s next ODI assignment is the home series against South Africa, starting November 30 in Ranchi. It remains to be seen if Shreyas Iyer will recover completely for the three games.
