Rohit Sharma has been named as the vice-captain in India's revised Test squad which Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday (January 1). Rohit joined the squad in Melbourne after completing his 14-day quarantine in Sydney, and will serve as deputy of Ajinkya Rahane, replacing Cheteshwar Pujara who was handed the role in the Boxing Day Test which India won by eight wickets.

Rohit was quick to hit the nets on Thursday and will look to practice as much as possible ahead of the third Test in Sydney from January 7. He was passed fit by National Cricket Academy (NCA) where he was sent for rehab by the BCCI to recover from the hamstring injury he sustained while leading Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020.

It will be interesting to see where he bats and who he replaces in the team that played in the second Test at MCG. One of opener Mayank Agarwal or middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari will have to probably make way for the Mumbai batsman.

India's regular captain Virat Kohli had to fly back home after the first Test as his wife Anushka Sharma is expected to deliver their first child sometime early January.

Rahane did an admirable job leading the side in Melbourne as India levelled the four-match series 1-1 after crashing for their lowest Test total of 36 in the day-night Test at Adelaide. He led from the front scoring one of his best Test hundreds in the first innings and later hit the winning runs for India who were set 70 to win by Australia.

India Test squad: Ajinkya Rahane (Captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper), Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, R. Ashwin, Md. Siraj, Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan.
