AUS v IND 2020-21: Indian fans slam Shane Warne after he calls Cheteshwar Pujara by a racist nickname

Warne used the nickname given to Pujara by his Yorkshire teammates.

Former Australia great Shane Warne has got himself in trouble after calling Cheteshwar Pujara's nickname coined by Yorkshire teammates. Pujara had revealed he was called Steve by his mates at the English county team because it was difficult to pronounce.

"Well I would prefer Cheteshwar, but it's difficult to pronounce so the guys have come up with Steve.", he had said.

Warne referred to Pujara's nickname which he had gotten during his county stint at Yorkshire during the first day of the Day-Night Test between India and Australia.

But Indian fans on Twitter were not happy with Warne calling Puajra as Steve on-air because of the racist context behind it. Recently, Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq had filed a case against Yorkshire, claiming he was discriminated against on the basis of his race at the club.

Even a former Yorkshire employee Taj Butt had approved Rafiq's claim and said that Yorkshire players called 'every player of color' Steve. "There were continuous references to taxi drivers and restaurant workers when referring to the Asian community," Butt said, as per ESPNCricinfo.

"They called every person of color 'Steve'. Even Cheteshwar Pujara, who joined as an overseas professional, was called Steve because they could not pronounce his name."

He also resigned from his job as a community development officer at the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation within 6 weeks of joining.

Former West Indies cricketer Tino Best and Pakistan cricketer Rana Naveed-ul-Haq agreed to Rafiq's claims too, according to PTI.

Twitterati was not pleased with Warne calling Pujara 'Steve' on the air:
