Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma added 170 runs for the first wicket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star for India's batting as his century helped the team defeat Afghanistan by 9 wickets in the third ODI on June 20, 2026, in Chennai and sweep the three-match ODI series 3-0. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and chose to bat first.
He led from the front, scoring 102 in 131 balls with 13 fours and 1 six, while Azmatullah Omarzai made 50, and the duo added 105 runs together. Then Mohammad Nabi (21) added 57 runs with Shahidi as Afghanistan made 218 runs. Prasidh Krishna was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 5/23.
In response, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma made 170 runs for the first wicket in 23 overs. Sharma looked good, scoring 79 in 69 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes, while Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 110 in 86 balls with 14 fours and 3 sixes, while Shreyas Iyer made 20* as India won the game inside 28.4 overs with 9 wickets in hand.
Prasidh Krishna won the Player of the Match, while Shubman Gill won the Player of the Series.
Jaiswal spoke to broadcasters about his knock and revealed his thought process and preparation.
“Yes, I really enjoyed. Initially, I got some runs in the power play, so I just wanted to keep going and play till the end. So, I was really enjoying it. I just focus on my process, what is in my control, and try to work as hard as I can. And of course, there is always support from the support staff, and they have been amazing to me. The communication is unreal. So, I know what's going on. So, I'm really enjoying it.
Yes, I think I've been lucky, so I'm just trying to convert if I get the start. As I have seen, like in sports and in cricket, especially when it is your day, make it count. So, I try to do that. Because of a lot of experience I had recently, I was trying, but things were not going in my way. But I was very determined today that I just need to keep my focus in and just keep trying to rotate the strikes. And if I get in, I'll just make it count,” Jaiswal told official broadcasters.
He was also asked about how he liked batting with legend Rohit Sharma and how he learned from him while sharing the crease with him.
“Of course, Rohit Bhaiya [is] always helpful. And I always ask questions, a lot of questions, to him and try to implement them in the game itself. Today as well, when I was getting dot balls, I was asking, "What should I do then?" He was telling me, "Just try to rotate the strike, and the intent should be there." So, I was keeping my intent and rotating the strike. So that really helped me. And yeah, I always enjoy being with him, going and playing under him. Everything is like, it's just amazing,” he stated.
India’s next assignment will be the two T20Is in Ireland and five T20Is in England, along with three ODIs as well.
