IRE v IND 2022: 5 players who can be picked in the Indian squad for the T20I series in Ireland

India to play 2 T20I matches against Ireland on June 26 and 28 on their UK tour.

The BCCI had recently named an 18-member squad for the five-match T20I series against South Africa to be played at home from June 9 to June 19. There were many names that were unfortunately left out and deserved to be picked in the Indian team after their performances in the IPL 2022.

However, this will not be the only T20I series India will play in the coming month, as they will travel to Ireland to play two T20Is in Dublin’s Malahide ground.

These two matches will be played on June 26 and 28 and will coincide with the Indian Test team’s practice match against Leicestershire ahead of their rescheduled fifth Test against England. This will mean a handful of players from the Indian team which will play South Africa in T20Is at home, will be needed to be sent to the UK earlier than others.

This will make space for some new players to be included in the Indian squad for Ireland T20Is and Team COC presents to you the five possible players who might be picked for Ireland T20Is.

RAHUL TEWATIA

Rahul Tewatia was the reason why the Gujarat Titans (GT) won two matches from impossible situations in the recent IPL 2022 league stage as he hit two sixes on the last two balls of the 20th over when 12 runs were needed against Punjab Kings (PBKS).

He then performed his batting magic once more against Sunrisers Hyderabad as well and has 217 runs at a strike rate of 147.61. Though he can bowl decent leg spin, he hasn’t been given many chances to do so. But a finisher like him would be valuable on a small ground like Malahide.

MOHSIN KHAN

Many were left surprised when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan was not picked for the home South Africa T20I series given that he is a left-arm seamer who can bowl 140 plus kph with ease.

In 8 matches, he has picked 13 wickets with a best of 4/16 and has clocked over 140 kph consistently. Many felt that BCCI selectors missed a trick by not picking him in for South Africa T20Is, but he might be more useful in Ireland, where he might get to swing the ball as well.

SURYAKUMAR YADAV

Suryakumar Yadav was a big name missing from the India squad for South Africa T20Is but he has been out injured after playing only 8 matches for MI in the IPL 2022. He suffered a forearm muscle injury putting him out of contention for a few weeks.

However, he might be in ready to return for the Ireland T20I matches and the subsequent white-ball matches against England when India tours the UK in the next month.

SANJU SAMSON

Sanju Samson was another significant name missing from the India squad for South Africa T20Is, as the selectors preferred Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, and Dinesh Karthik for keeping duties. Samson captained Rajasthan Royals (RR) into the IPL 2022 playoffs and the franchise finished second on the points table.

But with many limited-overs matches to be played by team India, Samson might be picked for the Ireland tour as many of the faces from this South Africa tour will be traveling to UK earlier than expected to join the Test team.

RAHUL TRIPATHI

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Rahul Tripathi was a name that was many were sure of being picked in the Indian squad for the home 5-match T20I series against South Africa, however, he was not named in the 18-member squad much to the chagrin of many.

He has been a revelation at the no.3 spot for SRH and though they couldn’t make it into the playoffs, Tripathi was a bright spot for them.

He made 413 runs with 3 fifties and the best score of 76 at an average of 37.54 and a strike rate of 158.23. He didn’t let the poor form of captain Kane Williamson come in the way of quick scoring that was needed by the SRH team in powerplays and many felt that he should have been opening the innings.

Tripathi might do that for India as there is a chance that he might be picked for the Ireland T20Is.
