WPL 2024: 'Grateful for team’s trust in me'- Beth Mooney to captain Gujarat Giants

Sneh Rana has been named Gujarat Giants' vice-captain for the upcoming WPL 2024.

Australia Women’s star batter, Beth Mooney, is all set to return to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) as the Gujarat Giants captain after missing the first edition of the tournament.

On Wednesday, February 14, the Gujarat Giants announced Mooney as their captain and Sneh Rana as her deputy ahead of the upcoming WPL 2024.

She was named Gujarat’s captain in the WPL 2023 as well, but she was ruled out of the tournament due to a calf strain. As a result, Rana took over as the Gujarat Giants’ captain for the remainder of the first edition of the WPL.

Now, the Australian left-handed batter has been reinstated as the GG captain, with Rana taking on the role of vice-captain for the upcoming WPL 2024, starting on February 23, 2024.

Beth Mooney said in an official press release: “I am delighted to be back with Gujarat Giants and grateful for the team’s trust in me. We have a fantastic squad, and I am confident we will put up a good show. It is good WPL will be played in Bengaluru and New Delhi, which are new to the tournament.”

Meanwhile, Sneh Rana stated: “The second season of WPL will be another festival of cricket. That Beth is back as a skipper is fantastic news, and I will do everything I can to support her. The squad is well-balanced, and we are in a good place as a team.”

Notably, Rana and Mooney will be part of Gujarat Giants’ leadership team which has head coach Michael Klinger, mentor and advisor Mithali Raj, and assistant coach Nooshin Al Khadeer.

Gujarat Giants will open its WPL 2024 campaign at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru against Mumbai Indians on February 25.
