The final of the WPL 2023 got underway at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai between the Delhi Capitals led by Meg Lanning and Mumbai Indians captained by Harmanpreet Kaur.
Meg Lanning won the toss and chose to bat first and she led the way with a 35-run knock. Shafali Verma slammed a quick 11 runs before she was controversially given caught on a high full toss by Issy Wong.
The third ball of the 2nd over proved to be chaotic as after slamming Wong for a six and a four, Shafali sliced a high full toss from the pacer straight to the fielder at backward point.
Just as the Mumbai players ran to celebrate the wicket, Shafali and her captain at the non-striker’s end, Meg Lanning called for a possible waist-high no-ball.
After being asked by the on-field umpires N Janani and Vrinda Rathi to check on the same, TV umpire Paschim Pathak deemed that the ball was not that high and ruled Shafali out. This left both the batter and the DC captain unpleased.
Here is the video:
The side angle of the ball tracker would show the Delhi opener deep-rooted in her crease and the ball dipping in over the stumps behind.
The MCC laws on the waist-high no ball under match clause 41.7 states: “Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is unfair.”
Meanwhile, DC finished with 131/9 despite being 73/4 at one stage and then collapsed to 79/9. 27* each from Shikhar Pandey and Radha Yadav propelled DC to a fighting total.
