WI v IND 2023: Salman Butt reckons T20I series defeat against West Indies will ‘dent India's confidence’

Butt said the Indian youngsters failed to live up to the expectations in the T20I series.

West Indies defeated India in the T20I series decider | GettyTeam India succumbed to a comprehensive eight-wicket defeat at the hands of West Indies in the series-deciding fifth and final T20I in Florida on Sunday (August 13).

In an all-important fixture, the Men in Blue posted 165/9 in their allotted 20 overs on the back of Suryakumar Yadav’s 45-ball 61.

In reply, West Indies rode on opener Brandon King’s unbeaten 85 off 55 balls and wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran’s 35-ball 47 to overhaul the target with two overs to spare.

After the result, former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt opined that India's defeat to West Indies in the T20I series will have an impact on their confidence in the lead-up to marquee events like the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.

Butt reckons the body language will show a dip in confidence even though the Asia Cup and World Cup will be played in the 50-over format.

"It doesn't matter what the format is or who the opposition is. Winning does boost the side's confidence for their next assignment. Similarly, a defeat like this will surely dent India's confidence," Salman Butt said in his YouTube show.

"You might not see it in the interviews, but you will see it in the body language and decision-making," he added.

India’s star batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli haven’t been considered for selection in the shortest format since the T20 World Cup in Australia last year.

In their absence, the Indian team management is giving opportunities to young players like Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Butt said the Indian youngsters failed to live up to the expectations in the T20I series against West Indies.

"Many would say that it was a T20I series, and several of India's top players were missing. But at the same time, this is India's normal practice. It wasn't the first time that a young side was picked. It also wasn't that West Indies are a very big team, and it was very difficult for India to beat them," he remarked.
