The two-match Test series between India and West Indies came to an end on Monday (July 24). The tourists clinched the series 1-0 after rain played spoilsport on the fifth and final day of the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval to deny them a clean sweep.
The series opener also saw the Indian team moving into a transition with Yashasvi Jaiswal making his red-ball debut. The southpaw opened the innings alongside skipper Rohit Sharma while Shubman Gill was shifted to No. 3 – the spot that previously belonged to Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been dropped from the Test side.
Jaiswal instantly made a mark in Test cricket, amassing 266 runs from three innings, including a dazzling 171 on debut. On the other hand, Gill failed to step up to the plate, registering scores of 6, 10 and 29 not out across the two Tests.
Disappointed by Gill’s performance, former India pacer Zaheer Khan gave the youngster a below-average rating of 4 out of 10.
"I have given 4 out of 10. Just keeping that 5 as an average benchmark. And then you have below average series and then you have above average series," Zaheer said while speaking on JioCinema.
Zaheer feels Shubman Gill would need time and will have to reset his mindset batting at No.3.
"As you try to gauge from outside, you get the feeling that when you ask someone like Pujara not to be picked in the side, then you are looking ahead. That's a clear cut indication of that. With Shubman Gill, the fact that there was a huge opening stand, has also not helped. Because as an opener you have a pattern of opening an innings. As an opener, you look to take your time. The ball is nice and hard. There will be extra bounce. there will be a timing, tempo. When you have a big opening stand, the ball is softer. That's what is happening, He needs that time. He needs to reset his mindset on batting at no.3," he added.
Shubman Gill will now be seen in action during the three-match ODI series against West Indies, starting January 27 in Barbados.
