The Indian team created history in the second innings of the ongoing fourth Test match against West Indies in Trinidad as their whirlwind batting shattered a few records in Test cricket.
India had scored 438 runs in the first innings and then bowled out West Indies for 255 runs on the fourth day to earn a lead of 183 runs. Given the rain forecast and constant interruptions by showers, Rohit Sharma and co decided to go hard at the Windies bowlers in the second innings.
They scored at an eye-watering rate with Rohit Sharma hammering 57 in 44 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes, while Ishan Kishan made 52* in 34 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes to his name as India declared their innings on 181/2 and set West Indies a target of 365 runs to chase.
These runs came in only 24 overs and resulted in India becoming the team with the highest team run rate in a Test innings. India scored their runs at a run rate of 7.54, the highest in Tests by a team in an innings of 20 overs minimum
They broke the record of Australia, who had scored 241/2 in just 32 overs against Pakistan in Sydney in 2017. The Aussies had scored these runs at a run rate of 7.53.
India also smashed the fastest team hundred in Test cricket history in just 12.2 overs or 74 balls. They broke the 22-year-old record of Sri Lanka, who had reached the 100-run mark in just 13.2 overs, that is in 80 balls against Bangladesh in 2001 during the Asian Test Championship.
Rohit Sharma’s fifty was the fastest of his Test career which came in just 35 balls. On the other hand, Ishan Kishan smashed the second-fastest fifty by an Indian wicketkeeper. Rishabh Pant has the fastest half-century by an Indian keeper in just 28 balls.

Kishan's strike rate of 152.94 is the fourth-highest strike rate in a Test innings (of minimum 50 runs) by an Indian player.
The highest strike rate by an Indian batter in an innings of a minimum of 50 runs is held by legendary Kapil Dev, who smashed 89 runs in just 55 balls against England in 1982 at Lord’s.
Among the designated wicketkeepers, Kishan played the third-fastest innings of all time in Tests in terms of strike rate.
Australia's Adam Gilchrist had scored a 59-ball 102* against England at Perth in 2006/07, at a strike rate of 172.88. After him comes Rishabh Pant, who scored his 50 runs off 31 balls at a strike rate of 161.29 against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in 2022.
