WI v IND 2023: Courtney Walsh lauds Kohli’s 121 in 2nd Test; says he wanted to something bigger in his 500th international game

Virat Kohli slammed his 29th Test century on Day 2 of the second Test in Port of Spain.

Virat Kohli | GettyFormer West Indies pacer Courtney Walsh said he saw the determination in Virat Kohli's face to make his 500th international appearance a memorable one for him.

Walsh's comment came after Kohli slammed his 29th Test century, his first in overseas conditions since December 2018, on Day 2 of the second Test between India and West Indies in Port of Spain.

Resuming his innings at 87* on the second day, Virat reached the three-figure mark with a boundary off Shannon Gabriel in the 71st over. With this hundred, he didn’t only end a five-year wait for an overseas Test century but also equal the legendary Sir Donald Bradman’s tally of 29 Test tons.

"It was a very, very good innings by Virat Kohli. A very good partnership between him and Jadeja. I think Virat was determined to get a hundred in this Test match, the 100th Test between India and West Indies, and the 500th international game for him," Walsh told JioCinema.

"He wanted something to remember from the match. You could see the determination on his face. The sheer timing and the maturity he showed, there was nothing much that went wrong with this innings. You could tell he wanted a big score and he got it. He wanted to do something bigger, he found the gaps very well, superb timing. At the end of it, proper celebration. It was a Virat Kohli show," he added.

Virat Kohli’s stay in the middle came to an end when he was run out on 121. His knock was studded with 11 fours and he was involved in a 159-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja.

Thanks to Kohli’s hundred and half-centuries from Rohit Sharma (80), Jadeja (61), Yashasvi Jaiswal (57) and R Ashwin (56), India piled up 438/10 in their first innings.

In reply, the hosts were at 86/1 at the close of play on Day 2, with skipper Kraigg Brathwaite (37*) and Kirk McKenzie (14*) unbeaten in the middle.
