On his Test debut, the southpaw slammed 171 off 387 balls (16 fours and 1 six) and added 229 runs for the opening wicket with skipper Rohit Sharma (103) to lead the foundation of India’s massive first innings total of 421/5 (declared).

After taking a healthy lead of 271 innings, the visitors bundled out the hosts for a paltry 130 to seal the Test match inside three days.

For his match-winning ton, Jaiswal earned the Player-of-the-Match award and the 21-year-old also drew rich praise from legendary India batter Dilip Vengsarkar for his application on debut.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Vengsarkar said he reminded Jaiswal of the opportunity he had when he spoke to him ahead of the Dominica Test.

“I reminded him about the significance of the opportunity and told him that he shouldn't let it go but grab it with both hands. I also told him to be consistent since at this level consistency matters. Single-minded devotion has to be there. Work hard and be focused, and then things will fall into place,” said Vengsarkar.

“I'm happy that he has managed to establish himself at the first given opportunity. His application was exemplary, and the discipline and determination Jaiswal showed to perform will help him a long way in his career,” he added.

For Vengsarkar, what stood out during Jaiswal's innings was his impeccable shot selection.

“The most important thing during his innings was that he never let go of an opportunity to score, and there weren't any loose shots. Such has been his focus on debut that you have got to applaud.”

With this victory, India took an unbeatable 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. The second Test will be played at Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain from July 20.
