WI v IND 2023: “He got the fruits of his effort,” Ishant Sharma lauds R Ashwin for his heroics in Dominica Test

Ashwin claimed 12 wickets in the first Test against West Indies in Dominica.

R Ashwin | GettyTeam India outplayed West Indies in all facets of the game to register an innings and 141-run victory in the opening Test at Windsor Park, Dominica.

Riding on off-spinner R Ashwin’s five-wicket haul (5-60), India bowled out the hosts for a paltry 150 in the first innings. The visitors then piled up 421/5 (declared) on the board on the back of hundreds from debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (171), skipper Rohit Sharma (103) and a half-century from Virat Kohli (76).

Ashwin demolished the Caribbean batting line-up in the second innings as well, returning with a seven-wicket haul (7-71) to bundle them out for a mere 130.

After the game, veteran pacer Ishant Sharma said that Ashwin got the fruits of his effort against the West Indies.

Ashwin’s spin-bowling partner Ravindra Jadeja also claimed five wickets across the two West Indies innings, and Ishant insisted that the duo is the best in the world.

“No one expected that a team could get out in one-and-a-half sessions but we all know Ravichandran (Ashwin) and Jaddu's (Ravindra Jadeja) quality. When they have picked up wickets on flat pitches where the ball doesn't turn much, this wicket had a lot of turn and help for them and they showed why they are the best spinners in the world,” said Ishant while speaking to Jio Cinema.

According to Ishant, it was difficult to face spin on the Dominica wicket, mentioning that West Indies spinner Rahkeem Cornwall also got bounce and turn.

“Absolutely, when we saw Rahkeem Cornwall and their left-arm spinner bowling, the way dust was flying from the wicket and this is not an Indian wicket, which is slow, and the ball doesn't get soft here. It's the Dukes ball, it remains hard. You get bounce along with turn here. So it becomes very difficult,” he added.

Hailing Ashwin as one of the best spinners in the world, Ishant said: “Ashwin, no doubt, is a great spinner - one of the best in the world and is ranked No. 1 in Tests because of that. It is very difficult for a bowler to pick up 10 wickets, whether you are a spinner or a fast bowler, you need to bowl a lot of overs and you need to prepare for that in the nets. So he got the fruits of his effort.”

With this victory, India took an unbeatable 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. The second Test will be held at Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain from July 20.
