“Just because they don't play IPL,” Wasim Jaffer questions India’s Test squad selection for West Indies tour

Jaffer said Sarfaraz Khan should've been picked as a middle-order option.

Sarfaraz Khan failed to make the cut despite being so prolific in Indian domestic circuit | TwitterTeam India's Test and ODI squad for the upcoming tour of West Indies was unveiled on Friday (June 23), with the selectors making major changes especially in the longest format.

While Cheteshwar Pujara was left out of the Test team, Ajinkya Rahane was named the vice-captain after his successful comeback to the side earlier this month in the WTC final against Australia.

Moreover, young batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad were also picked in the Test squad but there was a notable omission - Sarfaraz Khan, who has been a prolific scorer in the Ranji Trophy for the last three seasons.

Alongside Sarfaraz, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Priyank Panchal, who have been performing impressively in the Ranji Trophy, were also snubbed from the Test squad.

Taking to Twitter, former cricketer Wasim Jaffer weighed in on India’s team selection and asked the BCCI selectors some critical questions.

Jaffer questioned the selection of four opening batters in the Test squad while adding that Sarfaraz should've been given the nod instead as a middle-order option.

He also questioned the absence of Easwaran and Panchal despite their consistent showing in First-Class cricket for a long time.

My two cents on India's WI tour squads:

1. What's the need of four openers? Instead they could have picked Sarfaraz as extra middle order bat to honour his consistent domestic performances.

2. Easwaran and Panchal have also been doing hard yards in Ranji and India A, knocking on Test doors for a long time. Just because they don't play IPL, is it a case of out of sight out of mind? How did Ruturaj jump the queue?

3. Surprised to see Shami rested that too after a month long break. I feel he's the type of bowler that the more he bowls the better/fitter and in form he gets.

India will play two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is on the tour of West Indies. The tour will get underway with the Test series on July 12 and will run until August 13.
