Shai Hope starred with the bat for West Indies in the ongoing second ODI against India in Trinidad on Sunday (July 24).
Featuring in his 100th ODI, Hope batted with a blend of caution and aggression. He put on 65 runs for the opening wicket with Kyle Mayers (39) followed by a 62-run stand with Shamarh Brooks (35). In the process, he completed his half-century off 69 balls.
After Brandon King fell for a duck, Hope played the role of second fiddle, adding 117 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Nicholas Pooran, who smashed 74 off 77 balls to put the hosts in a strong position.
While Pooran got out in the 44th over, Shai Hope held the one end firmly and notched up his hundred in the 45th over with a six over the bowler’s head.
With this milestone, Hope became the 10th batter and fourth West Indian to slam a century in his 100th ODI appearance. Before him, Gordon Greenidge, Chris Cairns, Mohammad Yousuf, Kumar Sangakkara, Chris Gayle, Marcus Trescothick, Ramnaresh Sarwan, David Warner, and Shikhar Dhawan were the batters to have achieved this feat.
Shardul Thakur ended Shai Hope’s stay at the crease in the penultimate over but not before the right-hander scored 115 off 135 balls, which included 8 fours and 3 sixes. Thanks to his ton and Pooran’s fifty, West Indies eventually returned with a massive total of 311/6 in 50 overs.
Brief Scores:
West Indies – 311/6 in 50 overs (Shai Hope 115; Nicholas Pooran 74) versus India (Shardul Thakur 3-54; Akshar Patel 1-40)
