India and West Indies jousted in the first match of the three ODI series in Trinidad on July 22, 2022, as the Shikhar Dhawan-led side devoid of all the star power aim to beat Nicholas Pooran’s Caribbean side which is coming off a 0-3 drubbing by Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, West Indies captain Pooran won the toss and decided to field first. It was also then revealed that Shikhar Dhawan will be opening the innings with Shubman Gill in this match and the duo did amazingly well.
The two batters added 119 runs for the first wicket and Gill, who was playing his first ODI after 16 months, impressed in his stay in the misses. He had made a very stylish 64 in 53 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes.
Gill was looking set for his first three-figure score in international cricket, but then got run out mostly due to his own error.
On the 4th ball of the 18th over, Gill placed a short-pitched delivery towards midwicket but ran rather casually as Nicholas Pooran picked the ball, turned, and nailed a direct hit at the non-striker’s end. Replays found Gill short of his crease and the young batter had to walk back to the pavilion.

The fans on Twitter were not at all happy with Shubman Gill’s casualness in the running between the wickets, which cost him dearly and tore into him on the social media platform.
