Indian team suffered an injury blow ahead of the start of the three-match ODI series with vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja being ruled out of the first two matches due to a knee injury. Shreyas Iyer will now serve as deputy to Shikhar Dhawan in absence of the all-rounder.
BCCI issued the injury update on Jadeja with a statement on its Twitter account, which read, “Team India all-rounder Mr. Ravindra Jadeja has sustained an injury to his right knee and has been ruled out of the first two ODIs against West Indies.
The BCCI Medical team is monitoring his progress and a decision on his participation in the third ODI will be taken accordingly.”
West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to bowl first to exploit the moisture on the pitch with some rain forecasted as well. He also confirmed Jason Holder is out with COVID-19.
For India, there were plenty of changes but most notably Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson were preferred to Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan.
