A stand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium was named in Rohit Sharma's honour on Friday (May 16). The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled the “Rohit Sharma Stand” at the Divecha Pavilion Level 3, marking a proud moment for the Indian captain, who was present alongside his family.
A day later, former India head coach Rahul Dravid gave a witty tribute to Rohit, who was felicitated by the MCA alongside Ajit Wadekar and Sharad Pawar.
Dravid, under whose captaincy Rohit debuted in international cricket, shared a heartfelt message for the Indian ODI captain in a video posted by Mumbai Indians (MI) on social media.
"Hey Rohit. Guess you hit so many sixes into those stands that they had to name one after you!" Dravid started off humorously.
He added, "I’m sure as a young boy going into the iconic Wankhede Stadium — truly one of the great stadiums in the world — you would’ve wanted to have some great performances there, which you have done. I’m not sure you dreamt about having a stand named after you, but that it has come to that — it’s a just reward for your contribution to both Mumbai and Indian cricket.”
Dravid signed off with a classic punchline: "And when I’m short on tickets in Mumbai — now that you have a stand — I know who to contact.”
Rohit Sharma called time on his Test career on May 7, 2025. Having retired from T20Is last year, he will now focus solely on the ODI format.
