After Rohit Sharma announced his retirement on Wednesday, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly praised the player and noted India's many trophy wins under his leadership.
A significant chapter in Rohit Sharma's international career ended on Wednesday when he announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old cricketer reflected on his time playing Test cricket while sharing this news on Instagram and thanking fans.
Sourav Ganguly spoke to ANI and shared his thoughts on Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket and stating he had a great career and noted that India won ICC trophies under his captaincy.
"He is a great player for India, but someone has to leave the game. My best wishes to him. He had a good career, he will play One Day for India and IPL... BCCI's work is to support the player. When I was part of the BCCI, we thought he would be a great captain for India, and so he was. We won the World Cup, the Champions' trophy, Test Cricket under him," Ganguly told ANI.
“Well done on a successful career, Rohit @ImRo45 a super captain ..very proud of the achievements,” Ganguly had posted after Rohit’s announcement.
In November 2013, Rohit started his 67-match Test career against the West Indies. He amassed 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, which included 18 half-centuries and 12 hundreds. He became India's 16th-highest run-scorer in Test cricket in 2019 after reaching his highest score of 212 in a home series against South Africa.
He played in 27 Test matches between 2013 and 2018, amassing 1,585 runs at an average of 39.63, with three hundreds and ten fifties in 47 innings. He achieved a maximum score of 151.
