Shama Mohamed, a Congress lawmaker, put on a brave face Monday after being compelled to delete a social media post in which she "fat-shamed" Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and questioned his captaincy.
Speaking to the media after her social media post caused a stir, Shama Mohamed stated that she was simply using her right to free expression.
Shama Mohamed published the social media post during India's Champions Trophy match versus New Zealand in 2025. Shama Mohamed wrote in her post that "@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman!" I need to lose weight! Of course, India has never had a more unimpressive captain!"

Shama Mohamed deleted her social media accounts after her comment sparked a major backlash and allowed rivals BJP to criticize Congress for "body-shaming" an Indian captain. She also spoke with news agency ANI, clarifying that she was not body-shaming Rohit but only attempting to make her point.
“It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy…,” she told ANI.
