Shubman Gill, the India ODI vice-captain, has started the England ODI series with a match-winning performance. He anchored the India innings with a classy 87-run knock as they chased down 248 runs to win in Nagpur with 4 wickets in hand.
The 25-year-old right-handed batsman batted at No. 3 and hit 87 runs off 96 balls, including 14 fours. His outstanding performance with the bat, following the early dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma, enabled India to reach the target of 250 runs in 38.4 overs for the loss of six wickets.
Gill, India's vice-captain in the white-ball format of the game, has a batting average of 58.90 in ODIs and is on the verge of being the world's fastest batsman to reach 2500 runs in ODIs.
Gill will try to continue his strong form with the bat in the second ODI, which is scheduled for Sunday (February 9) at Cuttack's Barabati Stadium.
Ahead of the second match of the home series, Gill spoke with Star Sports about his ODI batting approach, which he described as a mix of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
“The way that I play in ODIs is like a mix of Rohit Bhai and Virat Bhai. And when I’m batting with Rohit Bhai, the conversation that we have is always very simple. We look at the wicket, and then we see that sometimes it’s easy for me to target some bowlers and sometimes it’s easy for him to target some bowlers, and I think that awareness is very important," Gill said on Star Sports.
Shubman Gill also differentiates the batting process when he is in the middle with Virat Kohli, who likes to stay in the game with singles and doubles.
“And when I’m batting with Virat Bhai, it’s running between the wickets. He likes to run singles, doubles, singles, and doubles. That’s how he likes to be in the game and keep the momentum going. So, I think batting with both of them is a little different, but it’s a lot of fun with both of them," he added.
