PAK v BAN 2024: WATCH- Shan Masood’s controversial dismissal due to poor judgment by TV umpire

Pakistan was asked to bat first by Bangladesh and reduced to 16/3 in no time.

Shan Masood dismissal

The first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh got underway at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on August 21, 2024. This is the first of the two Tests with both matches to be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

These matches are part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2025). Pakistan is placed 6th on the table with 2 wins and 3 losses from 5 Tests played and a PCT of 36.66. On the other hand, Bangladesh is placed 8th with one win from 4 matches and a PCT of 25.00.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bowl first. Bangladesh included Mushfiqur Rahim and Shadman Islam in their playing XI. They also picked three quicks and two spin-bowling allrounders in Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The three quicks are Nahid Rana, Shoriful Islam, and Hasan Mahmud.

Pakistan had announced their XI two days out from the match and picked 4 seamers Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Ali, and Khurram Shahzad.

However, Pakistan’s start wasn’t good as Abdullah Shafique was dismissed for 2 runs by Hasan Mahmud. Shan Masood followed soon for 6 runs thanks to a dubious decision and Pakistan’s best batter Babar Azam made a two-ball duck.

While Shafique and Babar were dismissed due to bowlers’ brilliance, Shan Masood’s dismissal was a contentious one as the TV umpire probably committed a huge blunder.

Shoriful Islam cut Shan Masood in half with a snorter of an inswinger. The ball was back of the length, got a steeping bounce, and seemingly beat Shan on the inside edge on its way to keeper Litton Das.

Despite an appeal from Bangladesh players, the on-field umpire Adrian Holdstock didn’t give him out. Bangladesh skipper opted for a DRS review, and the replays showed a straight line on Ultraedge when the ball passed the bat and moved to the pad.

But the Ultraedge shows a spike when the ball hits the front pad flap with the bat near and making its way to the keeper. Much to the surprise of Shan Masood, the TV umpire, Michael Gough gave him out and a furious Pakistan captain discussed with on-field umpire before making his way back to the pavilion.
