Pakistan narrowly defeated Afghanistan in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series in Hambantota on August 24, 2023, and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. However, the match ending was full of excitement and controversy.
Afghanistan side had batted first and posted 300/5 in 50 overs with Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring 151 runs with 14 fours and 3 sixes, while his opening partner Ibrahim Zadran posted 80 runs and they added 227 runs for the first wicket.
But Pakistan fought back to keep them from making a huge score with Shaheen Afridi taking 2 wickets, while Naseem Shah and Usama Mir scalped one each.
In response, Imam-Ul-Haq continued his good form, striking a solid 91 runs and skipper Babar Azam made 53 runs. However, Mohammad Nabi and the Afghan bowlers brought their team back into the contest with some crucial wickets in the middle overs.
Shadab Khan was then left with the tail to take Pakistan home, and he almost got the job done but was run out by Fazalhaq Farooqui at the bowling end while he tried to steal a quick single. Shadab made 48 in 35 balls.

With 11 needed in the last over, Naseem Shah once again proved to be the hurdle in Afghanistan’s way, as he made 10* and hit a couple of boundaries off Farooqi to take Pakistan home by one wicket and helped the Men in Green win the series with one match to go.
After the match, a video went viral on social media, showing players of both teams meeting and greeting each other. However, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was visibly angry and was seen exchanging a few words with his counterpart Mohammad Nabi.
Later, the umpires intervened and the heated moment was pacified.
