India’s Prithvi Shaw made his debut for Northamptonshire in the ongoing One-Day Cup and despite a decent showing with the bat against Gloucestershire on August 4, 2023, his outing will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
Shaw had initially signed with the Northamptonshire County to play two four-day County Championship fixtures as well, but delay in arrival due to visa issues have meant that he will only be able to play in the 50-overs format for them.
He also boasts of a formidable List-A record, averaging 52.54 across 53 innings that have brought him 2627 runs. These include eight hundreds and 11 half-centuries, with a highest of 227 not out in February 2021.
Meanwhile, in his debut game against Gloucestershire, the opponents were put into bat first in Cheltenham. Thanks to 108 from Graeme van Buuren and 61 from Anwar Ali, they put up 278 in 48.4 overs. Ben Sanderson picked three wickets, while Rob Keogh took two.
In response, Northants lost early wickets at rapid pace as they were reduced to 30/5 in no time with Emilio Gay, Ricardo Vasconcelos, Sam Whiteman, Luke Procter, and Rob Keogh all falling in single-digit scores.
Shaw showed some application at the other end and stroked his way to 34 in 35 balls with 2 fours and 1 six to his name. However, how he got out, would be something that will be talked about on social media for some time.

He was facing Netherlands’ Paul van Meekeren in the 16th over of the chase and received a bouncer aimed at his crown. Shaw tried to pull the delivery but missed it, while it went to the wicketkeeper.
However, the force with which he had swung, he lost his footing and as he fell onto the floor near the stumps, his leg grazed the stumps and dislodged the bails, leading to a shocking mode of dismissal.
This led to Van Meekeren celebrating his wicket and Shaw was left sitting on the ground in disbelief before he got up and trudged towards the pavilion.
