Ace India and Tamil Nadu spinner R Ashwin has gotten back to playing cricket after a break since he wasn’t picked in the India XI for the WTC 2023 final. He is appearing for Dindigul Dragons in the ongoing TNPL 2023.
On Wednesday, June 14 when Dindigul Dragons took on Ba11sy Trichy in the 4th match of the season in Coimbatore, fans witnessed a bizarre incident as R Ashwin furious with a DRS review, went on to take a counter-review to overturn that decision.
It all started with R Ashwin's plea for a caught behind against R Rajkumar during the final ball of the 13th over. The right-handed batsman promptly requested the review after the on-field umpire called it out.
Ba11sy Trichy, captained by T Natarajan, lost early wickets after R Ashwin produced a carrom ball that veered away from the right-hander, and wicketkeeper Baba Indrajith made a fine catch.
The TV umpire reviewed the replays, though, and was overheard on the microphone claiming that the bat struck the ground rather than the ball as it passed near the bat.
The TV umpire decided that there was enough space between the bat and ball even though it appeared to the unaided eye that the ball had deflected after passing the bat because Ultra-Edge technology did not detect a spike.
After the TV umpire told the on-field umpire to overturn his decision, R Ashwin took a review and sent the decision upstairs again, leaving the commentators baffled. This made the TV umpire review the footage and replay once more, but he stuck to his decision.
Ashwin accepted the decision and moved on with the game.
Here is the video:
Ashwin picked up two wickets in four overs for 26 runs. Ba11sty Trichy was bowled out for 120 in 19.1 overs after a tidy bowling performance from Dindigul Warriors.
