On Friday morning, many of the cricket bigwigs including the likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma all lost their Twitter blue ticks which are given to verify their accounts on the social media platform.
These cricketers and many other celebrities had what is called ‘legacy blue’ ticks which they got from Twitter after verifying that their accounts were authentic and not a parody.
However, since Elon Musk bought Twitter, he has brought some big changes to the social media platform and one of these changes was to announce that the only way to retain the verified Blue Tick Mark on profiles is through a subscription to Twitter Blue.
A few weeks ago, Twitter announced that it would start removing the "Legacy Blue" Checkmarks from the profiles as it wants people to pay for verification ticks that were earlier allotted differently.
Therefore on Friday, celebrities and accounts which had legacy verification blue tick marks, lost their badges which included the likes of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and even Sachin Tendulkar.
Twitter Blue is a paid service by the Elon Musk-owned company. It doesn't just offer verified checkmarks on profiles upon subscription but also comes with a few other benefits. The monthly subscription fee for iOS and Android users in India is Rs 900 while the fee has been kept lower at Rs 650 per month for the web.
Before the company introduced its Twitter Blue service, the blue tick was given to authentic accounts of famous personalities, politicians, journalists, and public figures. Now, the checkmark can be bought by anyone who pays the subscription fee.
Therefore, now if Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and other cricketers require their blue ticks for verification back, then they would have to pay for the same.
The fans of these cricketers were surprised that their heroes lost their Twitter verification and reacted to the same on Twitter.
