PSL 2023: WATCH- Floodlight tower catches fire due to fireworks during PSL 8 opening ceremony

PSL 8 opened with Multan Sultans taking on Lahore Qalandars | PSLThe Pakistan Super League 2023 (PSL 8) got underway with a glittering opening ceremony in Multan on February 13, 2023. Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars clashed in the opening match of the tournament.

The cricket fans filled the Multan stadium and viewers across the globe saw a spectacular performance from artists like Abdullah Siddiqui, Asim Azhar, Faris Shafi, and Shae Gill, of the PSL 8 anthem.

The fans were also treated to performances by the renowned music composer Sahir Ali Bagga and talented singer Aima Baig as the two added to the star-studded line-up.

Speaking at the ceremony, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee Najam Sethi said that "Quetta and Peshawar will also host PSL matches in 2024. PSL has given several assets to Pakistan. This has become an international brand that we can be proud of. This year [several] foreign and local players are debuting.”

The winner will not only lift the Supernova Trophy but will also collect a cheque for PKR 120m, while the runners-up will receive a cheque for PKR 48m.

The opening encounter between Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars, which was supposed to begin at 8 pm PST, had to be delayed by 30 minutes or so after a floodlight tower at the stadium caught fire due to the fireworks which happened at the end of the opening ceremony.

Twitter was filled with videos and photos of the floodlight on fire and reports suggested that any danger was prevented as a fire brigade team put out the flames and brought the situation under control.
