A big controversy erupted in the recent BBL 12 match between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at the MCG on Tuesday night after he tried to run out Tom Rogers at the non-striker’s end.

The incident happened in the last over of the Renegades' innings bowled by Adam Zampa himself. Tom Rogers trying to get a head start in case of a quick run, had backed up too far before Zampa bowled the delivery and was promptly run out by the bowler and appealed as well.

The on-field umpire and the batter both looked at Zampa as if to ask whether he was issuing a warning or appealing. When Zampa confirmed that he was claiming the wicket, the umpire went to the TV umpire. Boos could be heard ringing out at the MCG while fans looked confused in the stands.

After watching multiple replays, TV umpire Shawn Craig told standing umpire Gerard Abood that since Zampa had completed his action before running Rogers out. It was deemed that Zampa’s arm had “gone past the vertical” - too far into his bowling action - meaning it was declared not out.
