Australia won the first ODI against England of the three-match series, starting under the captaincy of Pat Cummins in Adelaide. Despite a good effort with the bat from Dawid Malan and England bowlers, the T20 and ODI World Champions suffered a crushing loss.
Cummins won the toss on his ODI captaincy debut and chose to field first. The decision proved to be correct as Australian bowlers reduced England to 118/5 in 23 overs. But then Dawid Malan was anchored at one end and with contributions from Jos Buttler (29), and David Willey (34*), took England to a decent 287/9 in 50 overs.
Malan scored a superlative century, hitting a brilliant 134 in 128 balls with 12 fours and 4 sixes to his name.
During his knock, Malan tried to hit Cummins for a six in the 45th over, pulling the Aussie captain over midwicket as the ball soared over the boundary line.
However, Ashton Agar, positioned at the boundary leaped high in the air, catching the ball and throwing it back into the field of play before falling over the other side. His jump, catch and flick were all perfectly timed and the batters could only run a single.

Meanwhile, in the chase, Travis Head (69) and David Warner (86) added 147 runs for the opening wicket. Though David Willey picked a couple of wickets to put Australia in a spot of bother, Steve Smith with 80* and Alex Carey (21) and Cameron Green (20*) took the hosts over the finish line in 46.5 overs with 6 wickets in hand.
