The Indian cricket fraternity reacted sharply to the Indian squads that were announced by the BCCI on May 22, 2022, for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home and the fifth Test against England in Edgbaston.
The BCCI announced a completely different 18-member squad for the five-match T20I series against South Africa which saw KL Rahul being named captain with Rishabh Pant as his deputy. The team saw the return of Dinesh Karthik to the Indian team after the 2019 World Cup and Hardik Pandya was also named in it.

New additions to the squad were fast bowlers Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh, while a spin quartet of Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Akshar Patel, and Ravi Bishnoi were picked. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Avesh Khan were the other pacers in the squad.
When it came to the Test squad for the fifth rescheduled match against England, Cheteshwar Pujara made his return to the side after missing the Sri Lanka series at home, while the remainder of the squad remained the same.
However, players like Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, and Ishant Sharma were also the ones who missed out as they had been part of the previous India squad which toured England last year. Rahane has been ruled out of action for 2 months due to hamstring injury.
