India badminton team scripts history by winning first Thomas Cup tournament; cricket fraternity reacts

India defeated 14-time champions Indonesia to win their first-ever Thomas Cup tournament.

Indonesia was playing their 21st final in tournament history.

It all started with Lakshya Sen defeating Anthony Ginting by 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a thrilling tie. Then the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bettered the Indonesian duo of Kevin Sukamuljo and Mohammad Ahsan while saving four-game points, finally winning by 18-21, 23-21, 21-19.

Then came the big match between the two sides as India’s Kidambi Srikanth took on Jonatan Christie and won by 21-15, 23-21 to help India make history by winning their first-ever Thomas Cup badminton tournament.

HS Prannoy, who played crucial roles in the previous two knockout matches wasn't needed today, and neither was the doubles pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila.

The Sports Ministry of the Indian government announced Rs 1 crore cash award for the Thomas Cup-winning Indian team.

The BCCI also took to Twitter to congratulate the Indian badminton team for their historic Thomas Cup victory and tweeted: "Congratulations to the #ThomasCup-winning Indian badminton team! This is a historic feat and the entire nation ???????? is proud of you."

The Indian cricket fraternity also joined in the celebrations and lauded the performance of the Indian shuttlers in the Thomas Cup win on the social media site.
