The 2011 World Cup triumph will always be etched in the memories of today’s Indian cricketers and fans. It was India’s second World Cup win after 28 years.
Former skipper MS Dhoni was one of the architects of India’s victory as he slammed 91* off 79 balls in the final while chasing Sri Lanka’s stiff target of 275 and earned the Player-of-the-Match award.
For his exceptional captaincy in the tournament and unbeaten knock in the final, Dhoni often gets praised by the cricket fraternity.
In the past, some members of India’s 2011 World Cup squad have expressed their displeasure over media giving complete credit to Dhoni for the title win. Former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has become the latest to voice his displeasure.
Harbhajan asked what about the other 10 players and he particularly took the name of Gautam Gambhir, who scored 97 in the final against Sri Lanka.
He further cited the examples of Australia's multiple World Cup wins, saying the praise is shared between the entire team.
"When Australia wins the World Cup at that time everyone says ‘Australia won the World Cup’. When India wins the World Cup at that time, everyone said, ‘MS Dhoni won the World Cup. Toh baaki ke 10 waha lassi peene gaye the?,” said Harbhajan while speaking on Star Sports.
“What did the other 10 players do? What did Gautam Gambhir do? What did the others do? It’s a team game. When 7-8 players play well only then only your team will progress," he added.
