India won the ODI World Cup on April 2, 2011 for the second time since 1983 win.

Sachin Tendulkar fulfilled his dream of winning the World Cup in his 6th attempt | GettyIt was on this day, April 2 in 2011 when the Indian team created history by winning their second ICC ODI World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka in the finals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The MS Dhoni-led side also became the first team to win the World Cup final in their own backyard.

The Indian team had done it all over again, 28 years after Kapil Dev and his men first lifted the World Cup trophy in 1983 at Lord’s England and this victory by MS Dhoni and his team have been lauded as one of the biggest accomplishments of the Men in Blue.

Riding on the vital knocks of Gautam Gambhir (97) and MS Dhoni (91*), India chased down a stiff target of 275 runs with Dhoni completing the formalities with a six off Nuwan Kulasekara, which was arguably one of the best moments in Indian cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar, who has often cited the 1983 World Cup win a major inspiration for him in taking up cricket seriously, took to Twitter and posted "How the dream started and how it was accomplished”, standing in between pictures of the 1983 and 2011 triumphs.

"It wasn’t just a world cup victory, it was the dream of a billion Indians being fulfilled. Proud to be a part of this team that wanted to win the cup for the country & for @sachin_rt Nothing can match the pride of wearing the tricolour & bringing glory to the nation," wrote Yuvraj Singh, who was adjudged the Player of the Tournament.

Gautam Gambhir, who played the knock of the match, scoring 97 runs, posted on Instagram saying: “That feeling of fulfilling the dream of a billion people! It was a magical evening! #WC2011.

Adding to the nostalgia, Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel, and Suresh Raina also posted on social media recalling the history-making moment.
